He didn't sign for the minimum. He went for the MLE. Same with Howard.

That said, can someone try to juxtapose roleplay, sim, and real-life situations on why DMC would be asking for the max here? He shot down a 40-million/two-year offer from the Pelicans back in February.
I can already argue on why/how Cousins would sign for the max with the Pistons, but I would like someone else to try spinning a story on how he got the max that he might/should deserve but he was not able to receive or declined to accept in real-life. I would like everybody's imagination run wild the same way DMC's situation became a talking point and eclipsed James going to the Lakers.
Because for me, my current narrative is that he should be sent free to the wild with the starting bid at MLE range and let the market dictate his value. Because I am pretty sure he will be going higher than the MLE as there would be a bidding war for him and I can guarantee he will reach his ceiling easily.
---
That said, the only time I would be agreeable for him signing to a bot team for the max is when he gets Hayward/Kawhi/Parsons-super nerfed due to injury. It will handicap the bot team two ways: Detroit will go over the cap much easier and they will have a weaker-rated team overall. I'll only consider correcting DMC's rating is when he makes a successful comeback by January and when a human owner takes over the Pistons.
If Detroit has his Bird rights, I say that DMC gets his absolute five-year max so that he will be totally off the market and we won't be having the Cousins bid war of 2018 (sim league) or 2019 (real life).
---
I say we release Cousins to the wild with nerfed ratings - and see if he reaches his perceived ceiling value - provided non-bot teams can only offer him a one-year contract or a 1+1 (that's one year guaranteed and one year player option), mirroring the fact that real-life Cousins would be released back to the wild in 2019 after utilizing the Warriors' medical facilities for the following months.

And no... as early as now, I am putting out a disclaimer that I am not picking a fight. I am sincere in saying I would like others to compose a tale about DeMarcus Cousins. I might sound flat when I don't use emoticons/emojis, but sometimes, adding them makes me sound sarcastic. At least that's how I perceive I sound like.

Meh, I feel like the market should determine these guys' salaries...the reason a lot of guys aren't paying inflated salaries is because only 5 or 6 teams had space this summer. Our league's cap situation is a bit different.
As for the injury risk, we had Chris Bosh running around for a while. I think guys understand.

CHeck the rules regarding free agency and there is a minimum bid for particular ratings.

You know what I like to be roleplayed right now - how to simulate Kawhi's "won't play anywhere except LA" narrative.

Kevin Garnett Let's see before the trade deadline. Picks? Most likely not. I've been offering you players but you don't want! Ha! Take risk my friend. You're well past trading two first round picks during the inaugural season.
