It's because of this: www.givemesport.com/1371920-report-lakers-want-lebron-james-to-play-for-the-least-amount-of-minutes-in-his-career
I thought of posting this a few days ago back when I recalled this article I shared on the NBA Talk PH Facebook group.
On ESPN's fantasy draft pre-rankings, James is fourth behind Anthony Davis, Giannis Antentokounmpo, and James Harden. On Yahoo's default pre-draft list, he is much lower at tenth and he sits at seventh based on X-rank. So, what does that tell us about the "best active player at the NBA" going into the season? Note: Yahoo! Fantasy is acknowledged by the NBA.
Last season in ratings committee discussions, I was willing to boost Russell Westbrook because the then reigning regular season MVP was "only" a 96 and there were two other players who had higher ratings than him. By definition, the MVP is 'best player in the league', so it follow that he should have the highest rating.
But since we do not have a ratings committee anymore and we are relying wholesale on ratings using a modded database, I guess this is more than just an 'opinion piece' rather than an actual petition to rejigger the ratings. Maybe I'm just worried that since James is the cover of NBA 2k19 and that we base our ratings using 2k19 ratings adjusted to Live 08, LeBron might get a 'preferential' rating.
Summary:
- It is projected that James would have a decreased workload in his first season with the Lakers. This is also reflected in fantasy draft rankings.
- By logic and definition, the regular season MVP, being the 'best player in the league' at that moment, should serve as the barometer for player ratings.
- Since we are no longer tasked/obliged to customize player ratings, this thread might have no bearing actually.
